Lime reduction through ion exchange (softening effect)
In water treatment, a softening (lime reduction) of the water is achieved by the chemical process of "ion exchange". Undesirable salts are removed from the water with the help of cation and anion exchangers. For example, one calcium molecule is replaced by two sodium molecules.
At the moment the water leaves the fine channels (0.5 µm), an immediate pressure drop takes place. During this process, part of the lime in the form of Ca2+ is converted into aragonite. Aragonite has a different structure than lime (Ca2+) which means that it adheres less to surfaces or not at all. Disturbing lime stains are thus reduced.
